Knights of Columbus Corner
Know the Knights Knights Founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney Declared Venerable: On Saturday, March 15, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The pope’s declaration significantly advances the priest’s process toward sainthood and gives the parish priest the distinction of “Venerable Servant of God.” If canonized, Father McGivney would be the first American born priest to be so honored. Know the Knights Are the Knights a secret society? Absolutely not! The Knights preserve secrecy only regarding the degree rituals by which members are inducted and advance in the Order, and then only to preserve the ritual's impact for those who receive each degree. Each of the four degrees has a theme-in order, they are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism-which is exemplified in the degree ritual, for the benefit of the participants. These themes or ideals are grounded in the principles of our Catholic faith, and nothing contrary to the Faith is espoused, permitted or endorsed by the Knights, neither in rituals or in by-laws. The Knights was created not only to help others, but to provide a way for men to live out their Catholic Faith, in a practical, charitable way in the company of other men and their families. If that's a secret, then it's the secret of Jesus! Be a Knight: We're asking. Are you joining? Call Chuck Lewandowski for information at 606-6983. Did You Know? The Knights of Columbus was officially chartered as a fraternal benefit society by an act of the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, a 29-yearold assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticual and some of his parishioners. The Knights celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2007. Why did Fr. McGivney start the Knights? Tune in for more.

Micah 6:8 Jack Jezreel coming May 18th! JustFaith is just faith: We are called to be compassionate as our God is compassionate (Luke 6:36). What does the compassion of Christ look like in the modern world? How do I become a more compassionate person? The JustFaith program is an intensive, thirty-week program that helps to answer these questions through reflection, study, prayer and community. The program will run from September 2008 to May 2009 and cost about $150. To register, or for more information, please call Joanne Angvick, 443-1422. Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope: A Pastoral Letter Concerning Migration from the Catholic Bishops of Mexico and the United States (www.usccb.org/mrs/stranger.shtml) 6. We judge ourselves as a community of faith by the way we treat the most vulnerable among us. The treatment of migrants challenges the consciences of elected officials, policymakers, enforcement officers, residents of border communities, and providers of legal aid and social services, many of whom share our Catholic faith. Please Join Us: The Social Concerns Ministry meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month, 6:30pm, Ed Center, Rm 23. Call Joanne Angvick, 443-1422. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed. Psalm 34:19 The following is an excerpt from a statement by San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer, "Religion and Politics – 2008” Q: Isn't the Catholic Church really interested only in abortion and euthanasia? A: No. The Catholic Church teaches that the primary human right is life. Without human life, no other human rights matter. Thus " Faithful Citizenship " concludes that abortion and euthanasia have become primary threats to human life and human dignity because they directly attack life itself. This moral preeminence of abortion and euthanasia must be reflected in the discernment of voters as they seek to form their consciences during the coming election campaign. Such a preeminence does not discard the moral importance of other issues in the 2008 campaign, but it does mean that abortion and euthanasia should exercise a special claim upon the consciences of voters.

RCIA Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! The color red is abundantly evident today in the assembly and in the environment of our sacred space as we celebrate Pentecost and share our joy in the Holy Spirit. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear the dramatic account of the Spirit’s descent on the disciples in the form of tongues of fire. With this event, the final era of human history, the time of the Church, has begun. Pentecost is particularly the feast day of all who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. The ritual action of being anointed with Sacred Chrism and sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit is our own personal experience of the Pentecost event. Although in a less dramatic fashion than the disciples’ experience, we are nevertheless “clothed with power from on high” to be Christ’s witnesses in the world. Today also marks the close of this Easter season of rejoicing. After today the neophytes will no longer physically don the white robe, sign of their baptism. Spiritually, however, they wear it for the rest of their lives, as do all of the baptized. The challenge of our baptism is to bring our baptismal garment “unstained to the judgment seat of our Lord Jesus Christ” when our earthly pilgrimage is ended. The neophytes retain their status as newly-baptized until the next Easter Vigil. Now they have time to savor the experience of being a member of the assembly and of being nourished not only by the Word, but also by the Eucharist. From this experience comes reflection on the new lives they now live because they are baptized, and eventually discernment of God’s call to service and ministry. CONGRATULATIONS! On April 26, 2008 Robert Erler, Jose Antonio Solis, Lizbet Galarza, Berenice Nava, and Jose Guadalupe Nava received their sacraments of iniciation. They have worked hard and grown in their faith for the past two years. Congratulations!! We, the newly baptized and the RCIC program, would like to thank all those who made this celebration possible. Special thanks to Debbie Pizzato, Louise Ridsdale, Patty Malhiot, Father Ismael, Deacon Bill and the families of the newly baptized. We keep in our prayer this year’s neophytes and newly-confirmed, as well as all the neophytes and candidates from years past, and the current catechumens and candidates. We praise God for the time we have been privileged to journey in faith together Marjorie Melendez
ST VINCENT DE PAUL SILENT PARTNER The drop in our economy is showing in the decrease of donations to our St. Vincent de Paul Society. The recent food drive by St. Michael's youth brought in about onethird of what is usually collected during this drive. Your contributions are needed now more than ever. Please bring canned goods and non perishable food items and put them in the bins at the doors of the church each Sunday. We would like to see our shelves full again so the needy families of Livermore can be fed. Your help is greatly appreciated by our volunteers as well as by the clients we serve. St. Vincent de Paul Society reminds you to bring canned food items to the collection boxes inside the entries to the Church. Also needed are nonperishables such as cereal, pasta, rice, crackers, etc. Small toiletries such as hotel size soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. are always welcome for us to distribute to the homeless. Thank you for helping. The Silent Partner Program is a very important and significant source of funding for St. Michael's Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This program encourages parishioners to make monetary donations to the Society on a regular basis . Participation in this program makes possible the emergency help provided year round to the needy families in Livermore. To be a SILENT PARTNER, all you have to do is to write a note, indicating your name, address, amount of contribution (weekly, monthly, semi-monthly, annually). You can send this note to the Rectory or drop it in the regular Sunday collection in an envelope specifying SILENT PARTNER. Contributions to SILENT PARTNER are kept confidential. The only people who have access to the information are the treasurer and officers who prepare annual statements for income tax purposes. St. Vincent de Paul Society June 29 will be the next 5th Sunday of the month and the Sunday that the St. Vincent de Paul Society envelopes will be available for your donations. It is through these donations that we can help the poor and needy of Livermore . Please be prepared to put your contribution in one of the envelopes on that date. We volunteers of St. Vincent de Paul appreciate your prayers, food donations and financial support which all help us to help others. Thank you. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY St. Vincent de Paul Society invites all
of you to bring canned food items to the collection boxes inside the
entries to the Church. This would be a great Lenten discipline which
would help our group help the needy. Also needed are non-perishables
such as cereal, pasta, rice, crackers, etc. ************** The clients that St. Vincent de Paul Society serves deeply appreciate the generosity of our parishioners. During the month of March, your contributions helped 249 people in these ways:
These people were in dire circumstances, and your donations gave them a ray of hope. We also continue to request donations of toiletry articles for our homeless clients. We need these products to replenish our supplies, and if you can spare a bar of soap, small shampoo (hotel sizes are nice), toothpaste or a new toothbrush please drop them in the donation barrels at the entrances to the church.
For more information please contact Paul Kuzmenko at 447-3637 or kuzmenko@att.net.

The Order of Christian funerals strongly prefers that cremation take place after the full funeral liturgy with the body present. However, when this is not possible, all the traditional rites that are celebrated with a body present may also be celebrated in the presence of cremated remains. We look forward to serving you and your family as one contact point for your Funeral, Cremation and Burial needs. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH . High School Confirmation News We rejoice this weekend as one of our high school teens, Caitlin Erler, receives her Confirmation and First Communion at the 5pm Saturday vigil mass. While most children at our parish follow the same track in receiving their sacraments, Caitlin is proof that the journey can be different for everyone. Caitlin is a senior at Tracy High School. She intended to begin the Confirmation process in the fall of 2006. However, the week before she was to begin the classes, she was involved in a serious accident when she was hit by a car while riding her bike. After spending that semester recovering, she joined the Confirmation process in the spring of 2007. Caitlin demonstrated tremendous maturity when she joined a Confirmation program that was already in progress with a group of teens who she did not know because she had grown up in Tracy. Never having received her First Communion, Caitlin has been a model of genuine faith as she has pursued the Eucharist and her Confirmation. We rejoice with her and her family as she completes her Christian initiation this weekend. Registration: Registration for first-time Confirmation students will take place in July and August. Students must be at least incoming sophomores in high school to register for the program. Stay tuned for further details!
